Job Description

Join a pioneering research team at UCL Mechanical Engineering, a department with over 170 years of innovation in engineering education. As a Research Fellow in the Moazen Lab, you’ll contribute to a cutting-edge HFSP-funded project focused on the biomechanics of head-first burrowing in amphisbaenians. The lab is renowned for research in craniofacial and lower limb biomechanics, supported by advanced facilities in imaging and material characterisation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct simulations using finite element and discrete element methods to model burrowing and skull biomechanics.
  • Validate computational models through experimental testing setups and biomechanical analysis.
  • Work closely with project partners, including a PDRA and multidisciplinary collaborators.
  • Present findings at conferences and contribute to high-impact publications.
  • Participate in student supervision and support lab activities.

Requirements

  • Experience in setting up experimental validation for computational models.
  • Track record in finite element modelling of biological or mechanical systems.
  • Collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills.
  • Strong enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.

Qualifications

  • PhD (or near completion) in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience publishing and presenting research in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Background in image processing and/or material characterisation (desirable).
  • Experience in craniofacial biomechanics or biological systems (preferred).
  • Discrete element modelling experience is a plus, but not essential.

Benefits

  • Initial 3-year funded post with standard probation and appraisal.
