Job Description

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is seeking a visionary and experienced Head of Capital Projects to lead and manage a dynamic portfolio of capital works across both of ZSL’s conservation zoo sites.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage supply chains with external consultants and contractors.
• Oversee capital projects from RIBA Stage 2 through to handover, ensuring delivery excellence across budget, timelines, and risk.
• Embed sustainability, net zero principles, and whole-life cost models into every stage of project delivery.
• Ensure operational integration, quality governance, and best-practice project standards are consistently upheld.
• Foster collaborative engagement across funders, stakeholders, and internal teams to deliver transformational infrastructure changes.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in delivering capital projects in operational or heritage environments (e.g. cultural institutions, zoos, educational spaces).
• Strong command of construction and design processes; knowledge of JCT and NEC contracts essential.
• Track record of embedding governance, improving professional standards, and leading multi-disciplinary teams.
• Skilled in managing multiple live projects while balancing operational continuity and stakeholder demands.

Qualifications

• Degree in project management, engineering, surveying, construction, or architecture (or equivalent experience).
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and manage complex change programmes.
