Job Description

AXA Commercial is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Senior Construction Underwriter to join our growing London-based team. You will play a key role in developing profitable business and nurturing key broker relationships within the construction segment.

Responsibilities

  • Take full ownership for driving profitable new business through broker engagement and portfolio development.
  • Lead and deliver broker and client presentations, tender responses, and industry events to secure new opportunities.
  • Utilize decision support tools and data insights to underwrite mid-market risks effectively and in alignment with AXA’s appetite.
  • Support, coach and mentor underwriters to enhance their technical and trading abilities across new and existing business.
  • Actively build and maintain a robust pipeline of prospects, engaging proactively to convert long-term leads into successful deals.
  • Serve as the referral authority for construction underwriting, ensuring quality assurance in decision-making.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive experience underwriting mid-market construction business, including contractors and liability risk.
  • Strong negotiation and commercial awareness to develop and sustain profitable broker relationships.
  • In-depth understanding of insurance legislation, regulations, and compliance obligations.
  • Cert CII qualified (DIP CII desirable) or working toward relevant professional certifications.
  • Ability to influence, mentor, and lead through collaboration and coaching.
  • Eligible to work in the UK with ongoing compliance with Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) requirements.

Qualifications

  • Proven background in commercial or composite insurance underwriting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting and relationship-building with brokers.
  • Previous experience in a leadership, mentoring, or coaching capacity within underwriting teams.
