Responsibilities
Interns accepted into the Department of Commerce 2026 cohort will be assigned dynamic responsibilities based on their academic background and the specific needs of the host office. This hands-on experience ensures every intern gains relevant, real-world experience, making this a highly valued Student Internship opportunity. Core responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Policy Analysis and Research: Conducting in-depth research on key legislative and regulatory issues impacting trade, economic development (EDA), and telecommunications policy (NTIA). Preparing briefing materials, memorandums, and presentations for senior DOC officials, including the Office of the Secretary.
- Public and Legislative Affairs: Assisting the Office of Public Affairs and the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs with media monitoring, drafting communications materials (press releases, fact sheets), and tracking Congressional activities relevant to DOC programs and bureaus.
- Business and Community Engagement: Supporting the Office of Business Liaison and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) in outreach efforts, helping to connect American businesses with federal resources, and promoting inclusive economic growth initiatives.
- International Trade and Security: Assisting the International Trade Administration (ITA) with market research, export promotion programs, and supporting the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on matters of export control and national security.
- Legal and Administrative Support: Assisting the Office of the General Counsel and Executive Secretariat with reviewing documents, compiling case files, and streamlining high-level departmental operations and scheduling (Office of Scheduling and Advance).
- Science and Data: Contributing to projects within the Economics and Statistics Administration (ESA) or NOAA, which may involve data aggregation, statistical analysis, environmental policy research, or supporting intellectual property initiatives at the USPTO.
- Strategic Planning: Working with the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning to evaluate departmental goals, performance metrics, and contribute to long-term strategic initiatives for the federal government.
Qualifications
The Department is looking for exceptional Students and Recent Grads who are passionate about public service and excel in academic and professional settings. Successful candidates for the Department of Commerce Internships Program 2026 will demonstrate a strong commitment to the Department’s mission and the highest ethical standards.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
- Age: Must be eighteen (18) years of age on or before the first day of the internship.
- Education (Student Track): Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college, community college, or university (2-4 year institution).
- Education (Recent Grad Track): Applicants who have graduated within the past year from an accredited institution may also be considered, though preference is generally given to currently enrolled students for the core program.
- Interest: Demonstrated strong interest in at least one of the following fields: public policy, governmental affairs, public affairs, business, community engagement, economics, law, or STEM fields relevant to NOAA and USPTO.
